Right now, food and drink labels are confusing. They don’t tell us how much sugar occurs naturally in products and how much is added.

Too much added sugar threatens our kids, with rising rates of overweight and obesity meaning this generation could be the first not to live as long as their parents. It raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, wrecks our teeth and causes more of us to suffer from chronic illness, such as mental health issues and heart disease.

But the food industry tries to bamboozle us with dozens of different names for sugar.  Busy shoppers can’t tell at a glance how much added sugar is in their food.

It’s time for clear labelling of added sugar.

Send a message to your local health ministers today asking them to support transparent labelling that clearly shows added sugar.

Dear [your State Health Minister name will be automatically entered],

Added sugar is everywhere, and it’s got me worried.

The World Health Organisation recommends a daily added sugar limit of 6 teaspoons, but many Australians, especially young people, are consuming more than 3 times this amount!

Sugar threatens our kids, with rising rates of overweight and obesity meaning this generation could be the first not to live as long as their parents. It raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, wrecks our teeth and causes more of us to suffer from chronic illness, like heart disease and stroke.

The United States has recently changed their food labelling to include added sugars. We can do it too![1].

In Chile, the Ministry of Health issues black stop signs with a simple warning: HIGH IN SUGAR for the front of sugary processed foods.

    I would like to see:

    1. Added sugar on the nutrition panel
    2. Added sugar clearly identified in the ingredients list
    3. Warning labels about high levels of added sugar on the front of packaging

Please do the right thing and protect our children from sugar-fuelled obesity and all the health problems it brings.

    Yours for a healthier Australia,
